It all started when
I became a Mum. I was totally besotted with the baby that I had created, but as the months went by I very quickly realised that I was losing my identity and had no idea what the f*ck I was doing! My confidence was rock bottom, Motherhood didn’t come with a manual and I was winging it BIG TIME!
From being a confident, career-driven woman I became a shell of my former self. My world had flipped on it’s head and I no longer knew which direction I was heading in.
This is when I decided to start my first business. It was a craft business that I started from my kitchen table and very quickly filled my time while my Son napped. It generated an income for me, but more importantly it provided me with a creative outlet to use my brain again and re-discover my identity separate from being ‘Mum’.
This continued for a couple of years and fit well around the kids (my daughter had also arrived by this point). It was going well, but wasn’t enough. I wanted more.
While pregnant with #3 I decided that I had put my life on hold for long enough and launched my photography business (it seemed as good a time as any!). Starting with families I then entered the world of wedding photography and really found my feet. I was able to put everything I had learned into practise and create a successful business that I was really proud of and that provided a healthy income (way more than I would have been able to earn returning to work!) as well as the flexibility to work around my young family.
Three years on things were going amazingly with the business, but something was still missing. A little niggle that grew over time until I decided to explore what it could be - what was missing from the life that I had set out to create for myself?
And that’s when it hit me
I’ve always had an innate desire to help people. My whole career (pre-kids) was spent working within Social Services, with the last 10 years focussed on supporting disabled children and their families, developing and co-ordinating various short break services. That was my passion, that was why I always loved my job. I felt like I was making a difference.
Sure, since then I have been helping couples capture their wedding day. Those memories that they will treasure forever, which is bloody awesome. But it wasn’t quite hitting the spot for me.
So I sat down with paper & pen (and a glass of gin - standard) and looked at who I wanted to help. It was pretty obvious really, I wanted to help other Mums like me. Mums that had a great idea for a business and were looking for ways to grow that business creating the lifestyle that they want (and deserve!)
It was pretty simple really, and I’m amazed that I didn’t think of it sooner! I have talked a lot over the past year about how bloody hard it can be becoming a parent, even discussing it with Emma Barnett on BBC Radio 5 Live. But what I had failed to identify was the additional challenges that us awesome Mums face when setting up and running our own business.
