It's time to invest in yourself Sister // Stop downloading free sh*t!

You’ve been busy trawling the internet for all the free videos, downloading all the free guides and pdfs, working through all the free worksheets, attending the free webinars and guess what - you’re still not where you want to be in your business. Am I right? Yeah, that sucks.

Shall I let you into a little secret? I know exactly why none of it is working for you - because it was FREE!
What have you invested in it? What will keep you motivated to implement what you’ve learned?

I’ve been there, I used to drink up every bit of free information out there. Some of it I would implement, some of it wouldn’t. Some of it I would read/watch through to the end, some I would give up half way through. Some I wouldn’t even open. Soon my inbox was filling up on a daily rate with freebies and sales emails, each one reminding me that other amazing business women were doing exactly what I wanted to do - succeed in business.

I realised that I couldn’t do this on my own.

I made the huge decision to invest (money that I didn’t have!) in a business coach - Lisa Johnson. She was someone I had been following for a while and I absolutely loved her no BS approach. It wasn’t until I started investing in myself properly that it actually started to make a difference. It really paid off and I started to notice that I was moving towards my goals at a faster pace and I really felt like I was achieving something! Hoorah!

The thing is, the help that you need can’t be free. You may be able to get a small chunk of the information, or start to understand what you need to do, but in reality most free content is part of a sales funnel to get you to buy into someones service/product. They might give you the what and the why, but do you they give you the how? Do they walk you through the process, step by step, offering you the help that YOU need? Probably not.
It just doesn’t make business sense. Why would they give away everything that they have worked hard for/paid money for/taken the time to learn?
Although frustrating, it does mean that it’s not your fault that you just can’t make it happen - you’re not being told how to! Not all of it anyway. And so the cycle continues - you become frustrated that you’re not getting the results you wanted, so yo go looking for more free help. Can you see how this can actually have a negative effect on your progress, productivity and mindset?

I’m not saying you should rush out and start throwing your money at anyone that promises you results. I’m saying that as long as you do your research, by making a financial investment you are way more likely to hold yourself accountable and do the work/make the changes that are needed, meaning that you’ll get the results you want.

Now that I understand how important it is to invest financially in myself I don’t think I’ll ever stop. I’ve spent thousands of pounds on self development and each time it has paid itself back and then some! It has also helped my confidence, as I am now achieving more of my goals because I’ve got the right people helping me. This made me think of a comment one of my mentees made:

“Running a business can be a solitary and difficult thing to do, why should we expect to be able to do it on our own? I’m so pleased I made this investment in Rachel.” - Charlotte

Would you try to fix your own car? Possibly.
Would you have a go at re-wiring a plug? I wouldn’t recommend it.
Would you DIY a tooth extraction? Hell f*cking no!

We leave it to the experts, and we happily hand over our money knowing that they are going to give us the results we want - a working car, a fixed plug and a beautiful smile.

I see so many business Mums spending all of their time searching for the answers; asking the same questions in different free groups, attending every free seminar, constantly going round in circles and getting frustrated. It can be an aid to procrastination, spending more time searching for the next answer than actually working on what you know needs to be done. If this is the case then you need to take a step back and look at what is holding you back from moving forward.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this. Have you noticed a difference between free and training/support that you have paid for? What have you found made the biggest difference for you? How do you feel about investing in yourself financially? Have you done it before? What were the results?

p.s. Of course, being a business mentor this piece is written with some bias from my side. I do honestly believe that investing in yourself is key though, whether that is with me or someone else - find the right person for you and they will help you flourish.
