Making friends in Business
I don’t know about you, but I think that being a business Mum is f*cking awesome! Having total control over my calendar, the ability to work flexibly around the kids, making use of the free wifi in Costa….but it does have it’s downsides.
Isolation. Loneliness. Feeling like you’re the only one going through it.
I really miss being part of a team. Having people to bounce ideas off of and chat to about problems and successes. Working from home on my own can be a bit shit, especially when the pile of washing up waves at me every time I try to get to the kettle 🙈
So how can we solve this problem? There are thousands of Mums running their own business from home across the country, so how do we start connecting again?
There are so many organised networking events held each week, each with it’s own speciality - Mums in business, wedding businesses, local businesses, etc. Have a search online to see what groups meet local to you and see if any of them look like they’d be the right fit for you. You might have to try a few out before finding one with your kind of people, but when you do it really will make a big difference.
I’m not big on overly corporate affairs, so name tags and elevator pitches aren’t really my thing. Prosecco and inspiring business women are! 🥂 Find the right tribe for YOUR vibe.
Do your own thing
If there isn’t anything local to you then why not arrange your own? Reach out to some local business owners that you like the look of and see if they fancy meeting for a coffee. They don’t have to be in the same industry as you, although you may already know of people that are. Don’t feel embarrassed or silly, I love it when local ladies get in touch for a chat! I met with someone last week and it was such fun sharing our stories over a latte. It’s nice chatting to another business Mum that ‘get’s it’.
Online networking definitely has it’s place, and I am part of several amazing online communities where I have made some really awesome friends. I even run my own, specifically for Mums running their own business, and it really is a fab space to be. There are all sorts of different groups out there, some are free and some you pay for. There are groups for cake makers, holiday bookers, knitting enthusiasts, rock hunters…literally anything you can think of! In terms of business groups, I’m a member of both free and paid groups, enjoying different elements from each. Have a good look on social media and you’ll find a whole host of groups available to join. By joining ones suited to your lifestyle and interests you’ll already have something in common with the other members making it easier to spark up conversations. Remember - social media is about being social! It doesn’t always have to be about business.
You never know where reaching out might lead you - collaborations, referrals, inspiration, friendship.
What have you got to lose?
Be brave. Be bold. Be you.
